For two and a half years, journalist Jennifer Gonnerman shadowed recently released prisoner Elaine Bartlett, providing an intimate glimpse into the difficulties of reassimilating into a society ill-prepared and generally unwilling to assist ex-convicts. Life on the Outside was a finalist for the 2004 National Book Award and is credited with helping reform New York's Rockefeller drug laws.
Gonnerman reports on criminal justice issues for the Village Voice.
